The Importance of ROUTINE

Life has been exciting this past month. So many great opportunities have arisen in my direction and I’ve taken advantage of them in every way possible. Recently, I found myself frantically trying to get myself out the door for my first day of my new job. I nearly sprained my ankle in my attempt at looking cute for the first day of work with shoes and clothes all over my once pristine floor. After feeling like I had lost my mind as I messily got myself together, I realized this wasn’t fun, this was stressful and I obviously knew there was an easier more organized way to get ready.

So many people nowadays work multiple jobs with unpredictable schedules, leaving many of us out of sync and out of routine. I know when I’m all over the place, I find myself more exhausted and overall a feeling of disconnect. Fall is a great time of year to revisit and edit my daily regimen.  I like to organize my schedule by the amount of time it takes me to do each chore instead of waking up at a specific time, as my work schedule is tentative and ever-changing.

I split my schedule into night/day so that I can allocate enough time to do everything. I like to have this amount of time so that I don’t feel rushed and so that I feel refreshed.

This is what my routine in preparation for work tends to look like:

(1)    30 minutes: Nightly yoga or jog

(2)    10 minutes: Hang my clothing up for the following day

(3)    15 minutes: The night before I shower, and sleep with a microfiber hair turban

(4)      3 minutes: brush teeth

Total time: 58 minutes

(1)    5 minutes: get dressed

(2)    10 minutes: wash face and then apply make-up

(3)    10 minutes: style hair

(4)    3 minutes: brush teeth

(5)    20-30 minutes: prepare and eat breakfast

(6)    10-15 minutes: check e-mail, social media and news

Total time:  1 hour and 23 minutes

What does your routine look like?

BEE•U•Ti• FUL Moisturizing Deep Conditioner review!

I was recently sent a sample size 8oz tub of Bee Mine’s new product: “BEE•U•Ti• FUL Moisturizing Deep Conditioner”! I was stoked to try out a product considering this is the first time I’ve ever tried a hair product from their line.

I have a preference for more natural based products (although I definitely don’t have all natural products), and having claimed they are “Silicone – Free / SLS – Free / Paraben – Free / Protein Free”, I was eager to try this out on my mane! haha. Because this product is protein free, this would be great for protein sensitive naturalistas out there.

The product arrived to me about three days ago and I did the review off of one use.

Also, side-note: I had a little too much fun editing the photos I took of the product. I hope you find it entertaining, lol.

Product size: 8oz (also available in 2oz and 16oz)
Product price point: $18.97
Product features: “We are pleased to announce the release of our BEE•U•Ti•FUL Moisturizing Deep Conditioner; our first protein-free deep conditioner that helps to detangle your hair and provide excellent manageability. This deep conditioner is made with creamy and emollient Cupuacu butter, to promote smooth and soft hair while boosting the rebirth of the hair’s natural moisture and elasticity. Highly beneficial for dry and damaged hair. BEE•U•Ti•FUL also provides some protection from damaging UV-A and UV-B rays and helps to restore shine and moisture to stressed hair.”

Directions: “After shampooing, gently & evenly massage a generous amount of BEE•U•Ti•FUL into palms and spread evenly from root to ends of hair. Cover hair with a warm towel or plastic cap for 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water and style as desired.”
Ingredients: Distilled water, Cetearyl Alcohol, BTMS (mild emulsifier), 100% Unrefined Shea Butter , 100% Organic Coconut Oil, Cupuacu Butter, Calendula Extract, Chamomile Extract, Organic Raw Honey, Paraben Free Preservative, Fragrance (Phthalate Free)”

Application: First, I cowashed my hair with my coconut cowash from the product line “As I Am”. I then applied the bee mine deep conditioner in my hair in sections. Because the directions told me to leave it on for 10 minutes, I then put on my microfiber hair turban and let the product work its magic. I did not use a steamer, a hooded dryer or any heat. I therefore let the product sit a bit longer in my hair, around 20 minutes. I then rinsed out the product with cold water and went about styling my hair with my mango butter/shea butter mixture and pink ecostyler gel.

Scent: Without having read what the product says about the scent, my nose picked up on a honey/vanilla smell whipped together with coconut cream. It smells AMAZING. I’m quite picky when it comes to the scents I like to have on my hair, and this scent is one that I wouldn’t mind smelling all day long. The thing I also love about the scent is its longevitiy. I applied the product in my hair (and washed it out) yesterday morning and I can still smell a hint of honey and coconut. The scent lingers, but in a good way, in that freshly baked cupcakes at a bakery kind of way 😉

Verdict: 4.5/5 stars – I really have taken a liking to this product and this experience has encouraged me to check out other products from their line. Two things that are most important to me in a product are its (1) scent and (2) ingredients – and these two things are a go for me. I asked my mother for a quote in reference to how my hair looked by the end of the day and she said, I kid you not, “hot diggity dog.” She also had had a glass of wine, but hey, you get the picture 😉 I think I can pretty much surmise that that means it looked nice – lol. I like how my hair felt, granted my styling products had a lot of influence on how my hair turned out, too. I had “hand in hair syndrome” all day, oops. Is it worth repurchasing?? My response, “heck yeah!”
What are two things YOU find most important in a deep conditioning product?

Cloud 9 by Donnie

We live from the head down and not the feet up
And I’m adorned with the crown that’s making this up
And I’m fine under cloud 9

Yes I wear the lamb’s wool, the feet of burned brass
And the wool defies gravity like the nature of a gas
And I’m fine under cloud 9

Twist my cloud and it rain
And when it rains it pours
And the energy will absorb
Power for the metaphysical one

Happy to be nappy, I’m black and I’m proud
That I have been chosen to wear the conscious cloud
And I’m fine under cloud 9

I be a chameleon and wear it bone straight
But it’s so much stronger when it’s in its natural state
And I’m fine under cloud 9

Twist my cloud and let it rain
And when it rains it pours
And the energy will absorb
Power for the metaphysical one

(My) Curly/Kinky Hair tool necessities!

I put together a collage of hair tools I need to maintain my hair. These are hair tools I use on my hair on a weekly basis.

If a friend or colleague asked you what supplies they needed to “go natural”, what would you recommend?

Back to school hair accessories – starring Quoise Inc!

September is slowly but surely approaching and for many of us that means ‘so long summer‘ or until next year, at least. During this transitional period of back to school or back to work, many of us update our wardrobes to help us shift more smoothly into the next season. For many of us, we update our clothing – that’s what I usually like to do.

Years prior, my hair and its style was put on the backburner despite the fact that hair accessories are a great way to change up ones’ style. I’m not one for intricate hairstyles because simply put, I don’t have the time (or patience!) What I like to do to change up the appearance of my hair is wear headbands. There are an array of styles to choose from and all hair textures, hair lengths and hair colors can play around with them. They can make any ol’ LBD or plain t-shirt look chic.

I recently stocked up on some hair accesories from Forever21 since they always have a wide range to choose from and they often sell styles that correspond with ongoing trends. They’re also an inexpensive way to update your fashion and (safely) experiment with trends without having to splurge. All of these were between $1.80 and $5.80 – all steals!

I also like to support smaller businesses and start-ups and purchase from individual sellers when possible. I am a HUGE etsy fan, btw!  My college friend Ashlie Butler (a truly inspiring lady!) held a trunk show for her new company, Quoise ( at Henri Bendel’s on 5th avenue – an amazing accomplishment! Here I am rocking a beautiful purple stone headband, handmade by her!  This is definitely my favorite hair accessory in my collection. Follow the company on twitter: @QuoiseInc

And last but not least, I love BIG ol’ scrunchies. This one was gifted to me for my birthday from my grandmother. Its got a beautiful Africanesque (for lack of a better word) design on it. My all-time favorite hairstyle is throwing my curly/kinky hair up in a bun and going. It’s quick, cute and chic! Scrunchies are also a great alternative to the hair band, which can also tug at the roots of my hair and pull my edges (eek!)

Are you changing up your hair wardrobe for the coming school/work year? If  so, what hair accessory in particular?

What do I keep in MY spritz bottle? Rosewater – here’s why!

Recently, I found myself roaming the aisles of my local Asian food market looking for new ingredients for my hair and skin when I spotted a bottle of rose water. Something in the back of my head told me to pick it up despite the label suggesting the best use for this particular rose water is for making sweets. I instantly knew I read somewhere, some time ago, the benefits of rose water for hair and skin. I’m a sucker for ‘natural’ remedies and this bottle of $1.99 rose water was no exception.

I decided to do a little bit of research on the benefits of rose water when I got home to see how I could put this luscious-smelling bottle to use. I wanted to share with you what I found out about rose water and how you can implement it into your skincare and hair care regimen and perhaps even have it mosey its way over to being a staple product. 😉

  1. It is an anti-inflammatory that can aid in reducing the appearance of red or swollen skin.
  2. Roses are a great source of anti-oxidants which are typically known for strengthening our skin cells.
  3. Rose water can be used as a moisturizer and is a great one, too!
  4. And last but not least, rose water has an elegant aroma.

I also discovered how rose water has been a beloved concoction for centuries. Dating all the way back to ancient times, Greeks and Romans tended to their rose gardens critically because they recognized and valued roses for their nutritional and medicinal properties.

How have I been using rose water these days? Good question! Like many natural/curly/kinky haired ladies out there, I moisturize my hair daily using a spritz bottle. I fill mine up with distilled water and rose water and spritz my hair and skin daily. Not only does my hair and skin feel smoother, but it leaves a pleasant and light fragrance that lingers throughout the day.

What kind of natural oils or waters do you keep in your spritz bottle?

Miss Jessie’s (3) samples review!

I was browsing the Miss Jessie’s website, contemplating whether or not I wanted to take the big dive and splurge on an overpriced 8oz product. Apologies for the bluntness, but I have a hard time seeing my money go into a product that may end up sitting eternally in my bathroom cupboard. I’ve also read numerous reviews of mixed opinions and claims that these products aren’t even all natural – yet they flaunt a premium price tag… my mind goes, “huh???”

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Miss Jessie’s is now offering free samples of their products, in a small plastic pouch, similar to samples you’d find in lifestyle/women’s magazines. I immediately ordered three from Miss Jessie’s. I was ecstatic to have these products arrive to me in a very timely manner, just three days!

And now, I present to you a thorough review (from just one or two time use, mind you) of Miss Jessie’s (1) Curly Butter Creme, (2) Curly Meringue and (3) Pillow Soft Curls.

(1) Curly Butter Creme **I received the 1oz sample pack, so the price and size are based off the smallest tube available from Miss Jessie’s!

Product size: 8oz
Product price point: $32
Availability: CVS, Target,
Product features:
This Curly Buttercreme hairdress from Miss Jessie is spiked with extra cooling peppermint essence, making it perfect for growing out natural hair and preventing peppercorn tangled knotted ends. Just apply a dollop to instantly hydrate and soften dry, crunchy curls. Curly Buttercreme is excellent for taming hairline edges, moisturizing pony puffs, two strand twists, coils, braids, cornrows and naturals.

Ingredients: Water, Petrolatum, Glycerin, Mineral Oil, Acetylated Lanolin, Glyceryl Stearate,PEG 100 Stearate, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Panthenol, PEG-8 Dilaurate, Ceteareth-20, Stearyl Alcohol, Triethanolamine, Fragrance, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Orange 4 (C1 1550), Yellow 10 (C1 47005)

Application: I applied the Miss Jessie’s Buttercreme after cowashing in the shower with TRESemme Naturals. My hair was damp, but not drenched. I applied half of the sample pack from root-to-tip.

Scent: Peppermint, ‘nought said. I am not a fan of hair products that smell minty, or any body products for that matter. The only product I think is suitable being mint, is my dental care products. I think any skin care/hair care/body care product that goes on the minty side of things, is doing it wrong, but that is my own personal opinion. I left my house smelling like I smothered my hair in peppermint patty…. In other more simplistic terms, I didn’t like the scent.

Verdict: 2/5 ***** stars. When my hair dried, it was not moisturized enough. I should have used an oil or a butter so that it would sit better and I’m sure if I had, it would have worked to my liking. But the mere fact I found the scent annoying, put me off altogether and doesn’t even make it worth it.

(2) Miss Jessie’s Curly Meringue **I received the 1oz sample pack, so the price and size are based off the smallest tube available from Miss Jessie’s!

Product size: 8oz
Product price point: $22
Availability: CVS, Target,
Product features:
Create natural, soft curls with Miss Jessie’s curl meringue. Smoothes frizzy, out-of-control hair for a more controlled look. Perfect for use on curly and frizzy hair types. Adds shine to the most popular styles. Comes in a cream form, which makes it easy to rub into the hair.

Ingredients: Purified Water, Carbomer, PVP, VP/VA Copolymer, Vegetable Glycerin, Triethanolamine, Wheat Germ Oil, Lemongrass Extract, Sodium Hydroxymethylglyclycinate, Tetrasodium, EDTA, FD&C Yellow 5, Fragrance.

Application: I applied this product on damp hair after applying TRESemme Naturals conditioner.

Scent: This had a strong tropical scent. I smelled pineapple and coconut the most. It was a little too strong for my taste, but it was not awful.

Verdict: 3/5 ***** stars. This product was so-so for my curls. I could have used a bit more moisture and added a natural ingredient like shea butter or coconut oil in the mix. But it was fine. The smell was ok. I may or may not repurchase this product again, but because of the price, I think I could find something better and more easy on my pocket.

(3) Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls **I received the 1oz sample pack, so the price and size are based off the smallest tube available from Miss Jessie’s!

Product size: 8.5 oz
Product price point: $22
Availability: CVS, Target,
Product features:
The name says it all. Miss Jessie’s PILLOW SOFT CURLS™ is the new styling lotion that borrows fabric care technology and marries it to haircare. If you don’t want ramen noodle definition and instead want a larger, expanded, fluffy curl then PILLOW SOFT CURLS™ is for you! It’s the first “fabric softener” type styling lotion that will leave your curls clothesline fresh and fluffy soft. You will see that PILLOW SOFT CURLS™ is so easy to apply. It spreads so smoothly and feels as light as a feather on your curls.

Water (Aqua), Emulsifying Wax NF, Glycerin, Amodimethicone, Behentronium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Methyl Gluceth-20 Hydroethylcellulose, Guar Hydroxypropyltrium Chloride, Phyenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Triticum vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Carthamus tintorius (Safflower) Oil, Persea gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Citric Acid, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Silk Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Urtica dioica (Nettle) Extract, Equisetum arvense Leaf Extract, Chamomilla recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Althaea officinalis Root Extract, Agave americana Leaf Extract, Blue 1 (CI42090)

Application: I applied this product on damp hair after cowashing with TRESemme Naturals conditioner.

Scent: Not going to lie, every time I whipped my hair side to side, I thought the strong, clothing detergent smell I kept whiffing was from my clothes – lol! It smelled like my hair came straight out of the dryer. I initially thought maybe they gave it this scent to correspond with the name of the product “pillow soft curls”? As if it’s supposed to make your hair FEEL and SMELL like you put hair softener in your hair, kind of like laundry. I like the literal aspect of it, but for my hair? Not sure if I like it all that much…

Verdict: 4/5 ***** Despite the fresh-out-of-the-wash kind of smell, I thought it worked well. It defined my curls in a way that gave it body. My hair dried a big poofy and curly, the way I like it and I didn’t even need any extra moisturizers. Out of all the products I’ve tried from Miss Jessie’s line, this one is by far my favorite and maybe even worth repurchasing. 🙂

Product Review: Dove Nourishing Oil Care line

Disclaimer: I purchased both of these products with my own money. I was not asked or paid to review these products!

As I was skimming the aisles of my local CVS, my eyes were enticed by pretty gold and ivory packaging of Dove’s new Argan Oil-based product line. I immediately knew I had to try it. Now that mainstream drugstore brands are catching onto the natural ingredient/natural hair fad (I’d call it more of a lifestyle change and awareness by consumers such as myself *ahem*), you can find big name brands trying to gain the attention of naturalistas everywhere with jargon such as “coconut oil”, “argan oil”, “organic”, and “paraben-free”/silicone-free” and more clearly visible on product packaging!

I knew I had to try it. I try to steer clear of buying products based on their “looks”, but I’m somehow always tricked into glossy, sleek and clean-looking packaging. Good job Dove marketing team 😉

The two products I decided to try out are: (1) Dove Nutritive Therapy, Nourishing Oil Care Daily Treatment Conditioner and (2) Nourishing Oil Care Anti-Frizz Serum with Argan Oil.

(1) Dove Nutritive Therapy, Nourishing Oil Care Daily Treatment Conditioner
Product size: 8oz
Product price point: Around $6.50
Availability: At most drugstores and grocery stores
Product features: “Conditioner and treatment in one
-Dramatically transforms even extra dry, rough and frizzy hair
-Formula with Weightless Nutri-Oils replenishes essential nutrients
-Deep nourishment for amazing smoothness
-Advanced care and repair for beautiful hair” – Dove website

Ingredients: Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Lactic Acid, Behentrimonium chloride, Glycerin, Fragrance (Parfum), Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Dipropylene Glycol, Amodimethicone, Polyurethane-39, Petrolatum, Disodium EDTA, DMD Hydantoin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, PEG-7 Propylheptyl Ether, Cetrimonium Chloride, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, PEG-180M, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Trehalose, Gluconolactone, Adipic Acid, Sodium Sulfate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Iron Oxides (CI 77492).

Application: I applied this product in the shower after co-washing with TRESemme Naturals conditioner (a staple in my hair routine). I squeezed about enough product to lather it on from root to tip. I let it sit on my hair for about 5 minutes before rinsing out the rest of the product. The consistency is of a thick butter and it comes out in two colors: yellow and white, kind of like crest toothpaste, haha. I got more than enough slip for my dry, fine curly “3c” hair.

Scent: It smelled very good, like most Dove products. However, it does not have a natural scent, it is definitely perfumed (as you can see within the ingredient list). I’d say it has a light floral/cream scent with a hint of almond.

Verdict: 3.5/5 stars. Love the scent, love the packaging, I wish the consistency were a little less thick and provided some more slip because I didn’t feel like it penetrated as much as it could have. It left my hair feeling pretty soft, but alas, I’ve felt it softer and more to my liking with other products. Repurchasing is unlikely however, as I know products that are better suited for my hair type and texture.

(2) Nourishing Oil Care Anti-Frizz Serum with Argan Oil

Product size: 1.35 fl oz (40 ml)
Product price point: Around $6.50
Availability: At most drugstores and grocery stores
Product features: “The Dove® Nourishing Oil Care Collection transforms dry, rough and frizzy hair into beautifully smooth hair that’s easier to manage and style.

Dove® Weightless Nutri-Oils, now enriched with Argan Oil, penetrate hair rapidly to deeply nourish, instantly smooth frizz and revitalize shine without weighing hair down.” -Dove website
Product Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Isohexadecane, Dimethiconol), Phenyl Trimethicone, Amodimethicone, Fragrance (Parfum), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil.

Application: I applied this after having used the daily treatment conditioner out of the shower. I wore a microfiber turban for about 20 minutes and applied it when my hair was damp and not dripping wet. It felt like a typical serum or an oil; consistency similar to that of an oil such as extra virgin olive oil. It’s clear and lightweight. I applied 5 pumps in total since my hair is a little bit passed BSL (bra strap length) when curly. It felt similar to that of Organix Coconut milk serum, as far as texture.

Scent: Similar to the conditioner… I smell a bit of almond mixed in with a light floral scent. Before I was saying it smelled like a creamy light floral. Smells beautiful!

Verdict: 4/5 stars. I liked the serum more than the conditioner. I loved the packaging, the smell and the consistency. I felt it locked in moisture and left my hair bouncy and somewhat defined. In the future, I will need to use some kind of mousse or gel to hold the curl better, but overall, it made my hair smell lovely, look good and didn’t leave it greasy!
